Your profile
Fill this in once. It becomes your resume, and every cover letter and application uses it. No experience? That's normal, and we'll show you what counts.
Step 1 of 10: Your details0%
This preview updates as you type. Every job you prepare gets its own matched version.
Polish my lines
Checks every line on your resume for weak starts like "I helped with" and suggests a stronger version you can accept.
Cover letter
A general cover letter made from your profile. Jobs you prepare get one written for that business.
Find jobs near you
Search casual and part-time jobs, see how well each one fits your profile, then pick up to 10 to prepare in one go.
Paste a job ad instead
Copy the whole ad from SEEK, Indeed, a shop window or Facebook and paste it here.

Applications
Each job gets a matched resume, cover letter, screening answers and a follow-up email. Check them, then use Apply mode to copy each field into the job site.
Job sites need you to press Submit yourself, and sending applications automatically breaks their rules. First Shift does everything up to that button.
Tracker
Every job you save or apply for, from Saved to Offer. Drag cards between columns, or use the menu on each card.

First week basics
The things nobody explains on your first shift. This is general information for Australia. Rules depend on your award, age and state, so use the "Check with" links for your situation.
Before you start
Tax file number (TFN)
Your TFN is your personal number from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). It's free, and you keep the same one for life.
Apply through the ATO website. You'll need to prove who you are, so have ID like a passport or birth certificate ready.
Your new boss will ask you to fill in a TFN declaration. If you don't give your TFN, they may have to take more tax out of your pay.
Keep it private. Never put it on your resume, and don't give it to anyone until you've actually been offered the job.
Superannuation is money your employer pays into a super fund for you. It's for when you're older, so you usually can't touch it now.
Employers have to pay super for eligible workers. If you're under 18, you're eligible in a week where you work more than 30 hours.
You can choose your own fund. If you don't, your employer will tell you what happens next.
Your payslip should show how much super was paid and which fund it went to.
Not sure if you're eligible? Check with the ATOato.gov.au
Getting paid right
Minimum pay
Most jobs are covered by an award, which sets the minimum pay. Junior rates for under-21s are a percentage of the adult rate, and that percentage depends on your age and your award.
We don't list pay rates here, because they change and depend on your job.
Use the Fair Work Ombudsman's free Pay and Conditions Tool (PACT) to see the minimum for your age and job.
Casual workers usually get a higher hourly rate (called casual loading) instead of paid leave.
You. Your name and whether you're casual or part-time.
The dates. Which days this pay covers and the day it was paid.
Hours × rate. Check the hours match your roster.
Penalty rates and loadings. Some awards pay more for weekends, nights or public holidays.
Gross pay. Your pay before tax.
Tax. Taken out and sent to the ATO for you.
Net pay. What lands in your bank account.
Super. How much was paid and to which fund, if you're eligible.
Dollar amounts are hidden on purpose: your rate depends on your award, age and job. Employers must give you a payslip within one working day of payday. Keep them, and check them against your hours.
Polite, ready-to-send messages for the awkward moments. Fill the blanks, then copy. Your name comes from your profile.
Your privacy
Your profile, applications and practice reports are saved in this browser only (localStorage). There's no account.
When you search for jobs, your keywords and suburb go to our server, which asks the Adzuna job search service. Nothing about you is sent.
AI help is optional. When it's on, preparing applications and the AI buttons send your profile and that job ad (or your practice answer) to the AI to write your text. When it's off, nothing goes to AI.
If you turn on sharing below, an encrypted copy is stored on our server. The key is only in your invite link, so the server can't read it.
Nothing else leaves your device. No trackers, no ads, no analytics.
Share with a parent
Make a private link so a parent or carer can see your profile, applications and practice on their phone. Changes show up on both devices.
Anyone with the link can see and change your data, so only send it to people you trust. You can stop sharing any time.
Questions
FAQ
Is First Shift really free?
Yes. There's no account, no ads and nothing to pay. It's a free tool built by Lazar in Perth.
Does it send my applications for me?
No. Job sites like SEEK and Indeed need you to press Submit yourself, and automatic sending breaks their rules. First Shift prepares everything and gives you big Copy buttons, so applying takes a minute or two.
I've never had a job. What do I put on my resume?
School, sport, volunteering, babysitting, pet sitting and helping in a family business all count. The profile turns these into resume lines for you, and you can edit every one.
How old do I need to be to work?
It depends on your state and the job. Many retail and fast food jobs hire from 14 or 15. Some states have extra rules for under-15s. Check your state's employment rules, or ask the business.
What is a fit score?
A number from 0 to 100 that compares a job ad with your profile: how close it is, whether it wants skills you have, whether the hours match your availability, and whether it welcomes juniors. It's a guide, so apply for jobs you like even if the score is low.
Why can't I see live job results?
Live search needs the site's job search service to be switched on. When it's off, First Shift gives you one-tap searches on SEEK, Indeed and Jora, and you can paste any job ad into the app.
How much should I get paid?
It depends on your award, age and job. Use the Fair Work Ombudsman's free Pay and Conditions Tool at calculate.fairwork.gov.au. We don't list rates because they change.
Can my parent see my progress?
Only if you choose to share. Use "Share with a parent" to make a private link. The data is encrypted, and you can stop sharing any time.
